How long does your battery on your Android usually last?

Q. I know every phone will be different, but I worry about mine. I usually get over 8 hours when I use it a lot an more than that if I don't have wifi on and things. What's the battery like on your Android phone?

A. my Sony Xperia S (Android 4.0 ice cream sandwich) battery lasts about 1.5 days. And I am a moderate user.

what are the advantages of rooting android?
Q. I am not getting updates of android OS 4.0 ICS in my Xperia U ST25i. What does root do? I heard that after rooting my android I can get system updates of ICS? Is it true?

I recently bought Xperia U which has Android OS, v2.3 (Gingerbread), upgradable to v4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). but when I go for upgrade through PC Companion or Update Service Software or Android phone, it says you're up to date. How can I upgrade my phone to ICS?

And what if I install ICS manually? Will I have to ROOT as well after upgrading to ICS manually? Is it necessary to ROOT? What does root do?

Please solve this issue I shall be highly obliged of.

A. only rooting doesn't harm your device unless you don't follow instructions carefully. If Your U has a scheduled update to ics, rather than rooting and manually changing the rom (firmware) to even 4.2 JB( which is pretty dangerous for newbies), you go to xperia service centre and they'll update it fir you without rooting.
