Can you hack android phone to higher android version?

Q. i have a htc desire that has android 2.2,i want to test usbManager api,but it says that it needs at least api level 12,and mine is 8.so can i somehow hack my phone to a for example android 3.2 so i can use this feature?
i dont want to just upgrade my 2.2 android to 3.2 and cant use that feature,i mean does just upgrading the phone make that feature available?

A. its called rooting your phone i wont root mine but from what i hear its pretty sweet when you do, but there is no android 3.2 for android phones android 3.0 is for tablets android 2.3 is for phones, but as for upgrading to a version not yet for your phone you have to root it there are tons of videos on youtube that show you how or just google it.

What are the system requirements for Android update?
Q. I am thinking about buying a refurbished Android smartphone and it has an old Android OS. Where can I check for the system requirements for the different Android OS versions?

A. With all the different android operating systems. Here is what you need to know.

Android 2.2 (Called Froyo. The oldest of the android operating system).
Android 2.3 (operating system. called Gingerbread. Supports Adobe flash).
Android 3.0 (only for tablets, usually 7 to 10 inches. Called Honeycomb)
Android 4.0 (only on Nexus cell phone and the newest tablets. Called Ice cream)

* For cell phones, I would recommend getting Android 2.3. Make sure that it is running Android 2.3 or Gingerbread. I would say 90 percent of the cell phones already have Gingerbread running on the android cell phones.
